5 For Friday: Krept & Konan, Ghetto Sage, Wretch 32 & More

A whole load of good music has come pouring in like the heavy rain that’s swamped the UK this week. In today’s 5 for Friday, we include a cocktail of singles from some of the finest talent in the industry, such as JGrrey, who makes a return with ‘Dreaming Fool’, and Wretch 32 clocking in with his brand new album ‘Upon Reflection’. We could go on to explain why you need to listen to these songs, but we’d rather let the music speak for itself. Don’t waste anymore time, go ahead and have a listen.

JGrrey – Dreaming Fool

JGrrey follows on from her last single, ‘Better Off’, and takes us into her dream world with ‘Dreaming Fool’. Dropping off a visual to accompany her brand new release, we roll through a detached set of scenarios in a pitch-black world she doesn’t want to escape from.

‘Dreaming Fool’ eases you into the a calming pool of sounds with a shy groove stirred by a deep bassline and rattling percussion working round-the-clock. JGrrey correlates the crippling effects of love to a dream you wouldn’t want to leave behind. You can bet we’ll have this one on rotation as we wait for the release of an upcoming project, ‘Ugh’, that is yet to be confirmed, but we’re hopeful.

Free Nationals – Eternal Light feat. Chronixx

Free Nationals return with their brand of soft-funk and R&B fusions to brighten up your gloomy Friday. ‘Eternal Light’ finds the band recruit reggae singer Chronixx on their musical voyage that’ll hit each and every angle of your soul.

On ‘Eternal Light’, the ensemble curate an edible sonic by marrying reggae euphonies to stirring soulful bits. In the process re-creating a new sound out of two contrasting elements, striking up a degree of bliss and positivity to charge you up. Off the back of their string of singles, we reckon we’re not the only ones who could do with much more from the jazzy outfit.

Ghetto Sage –  Häagen Dazs

The midwest trio — Noname, Saba & Smino —reunite post-Room 25 and make their official debut as Ghetto Sage on ‘Häagen Dazs’. With each artist having a stellar 2018, it’s only right they put their efforts together as a close-knit collective.

‘Häagen Dazs’ hits us with a heavy production pumping with shrewd percussion weaved into a menacing tune spurred on by a flute. Smino tinkers in with a head-bobbing hook transitioning into a verse with his stylistic slippery flow. Handing the baton over to Saba who runs down his verse where he talks about violating dress codes and securing the bag in rapid fashion, while Noname laps up a noteworthy performance. A steamy prose that lives up to the factions label and culminates everything we ought to expect from the part philosophical, part hood bound trio.

Krept & Konan – G Love

It’s been quite a turbulent period for the duo, but it’s great to see them arise with some good vibrations. South London’s Krept & Konan tag Afrobeats star Wizkid on ‘G Love’ and deliver a tropical sonic bursting with afrobeats yet tame with laidback lyricism.

In the coming season the climates got a bit chilly, but the afro-infused production cooked up by P2J is sure to get you into a toasty groove. It carries a smooth sweeping tempo with glossy keys and smothered hand drum pounds. The trifecta trade lines with each other about their opulent lifestyle and their romantic affairs in this ghetto love story. ‘G Love’ sits on their forthcoming album, ‘Revenge Is Sweet’, which is due for release on 1st November.

Wretch 32 – Upon Reflection

Giving you songs to vibe out to over the weekend is important, but recognising artistry is essential. Wretch 32 peels the layers off his skin and embarks on a soul search with the title track of his latest album, ‘Upon Reflection’.

‘Upon Reflection’ features brooding productions scored with infinite keys and a minimal drum pattern which drills a poignant thump on your ears. Wretch 32 is introspective as ever, but he impresses us with how he supremely oscillates between rapper and vocalist. On this Son of Sonix, the wordsmith laps up matters which titter between friendships, hardships and disappointments.
