5 For Friday: Chip, WSTRN, Nana Rogues & More

With the final quarter of 2018 staring us in the face it’s time to go hard for carnival weekend, soak up the final rays and catch the whine that will live long in the memory.

Remedee Ft. Kojo Funds X Yxng Bane X Masicka – Creepin Up (The Come Up)

Producer Remedee brings the cinematic lead single from the ‘Intent 2: The Come Up’ film soundtrack. Kojo Funds, Yxng Bane and Jamaican Dancehall star Masicka all come together on the single; offering fans a first taste of what to expect from the highly anticipated film. Masterminded by Femi Oyeniran and Nicky ‘Slimting’ Walker ‘The Intent 2’ lands September 21st with the soundtrack available the same day via Island Records, the soundtrack boasts a slew of features in the shape of Giggs, Dizzee Rascal, Jaykae, Krept & Konan and Donae’O. Speaking on the film’s premise Femi explains, “I remember Nicky saying – every film about drug dealers and those criminals, it’s always about them trying to get away from that life and, why don’t we do something else? Not all drug dealers are in a position where they’re like, ‘I wanna stop doing this’. Some drug dealers are like, ‘actually, I’m really good at this, this is what I’m gonna do’ and I think for us – for people that don’t do that, it’s easy to think ‘why would you wanna do that? It doesn’t make sense, why would anyone wanna be a criminal?’ But some people revel in that and in being that.”

iLL Blu X Krept & Konan X Loski, ZieZie – Chop My Money

Having originally made their name on the UK Funky scene, London based duo James & Darius aka iLL Blu call on Krept & Konan, Loski and ZieZie for the sharp shooting, end of summer anthem ‘Chop My Money. iLL Blu are the production team behind Mostack’s ‘What I Wanna’ and this time around they draft in a clutch of London’s best rap talent. Speaking on the track, iLL Blu explain, “this is a big track for us personally as it is the start of a new chapter on our musical journey. We have sampled a UK club classic Fish Go Deep’s ‘The Cure & the Cause’ this tune means a lot to us as it is the tune that inspired us to create iLL BLU years ago. Krept & Konan are sick – they are rap Veterans. We worked with them when they jumped on Mostack’s Liar Liar that we produced. We are massive fans of Loski – he is the nu-skool don, and getting our boy ZieZie to deliver a wavy hook on this track is a special moment for us.”

Chip Ft. Red Rat – My Girl

Three time MOBO award winner, Chip returns with his new single ‘My Girl’ featuring Dancehall royalty, Red Rat (the infamous voice behind some of the ’90’s most enduring riddims, ‘Shelly Anne‘, ‘Dwayne‘ and ‘Tight-Up Skirt‘). ‘My Girl’ comes as the second release from his newly announced ‘TEN10’ LP, due September 21st. Rumoured to be his most accomplished effort yet, his fourth studio album lines up production from Diztortion, Sampha, Silva, Victizzle and Sevaqk with an over arching theme of love, Chip is read to show off his versatility once more. “I can’t pretend to be angry when I’m not,” he says. “It’s all love. There’s a level of excellence in the rhymes, and I think I’m in a more positive space than I was. Even though there were happy songs on my last album, it came off the back of a darker mind frame. I’m showing I’m versatile with every song sounding different but it works as an album because that’s who I am, a musician.”

WSTRN – Sharna

Louis-Rei and Haile headed to Kenya for the visual to their latest release ‘Sharna’, directed by Teeeezy C the video highlights the country’s two sides, bouncing from the picturesque white sand beaches to the realities of life in the town is something the group was keen to capture on film. They explained to FADER, “Shooting the video in Kenya was an incredible experience. We were out there to headline a festival a few weeks back and thought why not use the opportunity to capture the country’s beauty? We tried to show a few different sides of Kenya, from the beaches in Mombasa to the Slums of Kibera in the capital city Nairobi. All very different, but equally striking.”
