Stormzy, is hitting some new peaks in 2016, heading to Oxford University for a speaking engagement later today. Following on from the new debut U.S. tour dates announced last week, the Grime phenomenon is also putting in work on his forthcoming debut album.
The Oxford Guild, the UK’s largest and oldest professional society est. 1897 will be streaming the talk live and performance from Stormzy today on their Periscope channel (@TheOxfordGuild). The Chairman, Abbas Kazmi, said “We’ve had a phenomenal reaction from the student body so far with over 1,200 students balloting for places in under 24 hours of announcing it.
Stormzy is the latest high profile speaker following on from Kanye West’s talk last year, and 22 year old MC said – “It’s an honour to be asked to speak at such a prestigious establishment. In school, all my teachers and my mum were super routing for me to study at Oxford, I picked music as a career choice and this didn’t sit to well with them! So to be asked to come down and speak to the students there is a true tale of destiny giving you the right cards.”
Stormzy’s rise and rise, has hit new levels over the past 18 months, hosting his own show on Beats 1, grabbing more MOBO awards, festival appearances and a debut TV appearance as the first unsigned MC to appear on “Later… With Jools Holland”. Making chart history, Stormzy charted the first ever freestyle as an unsigned artist at no.18 in the U.K singles chart in September 2015 with “WickedSkengMan 4” – but he didn’t stop there, leading into Xmas week 2015, Stormzy went for another one, hitting the charts with another freestyle “Shut Up” which went even higher charting at no.8 in the UK chart. “Shut Up” has since gone silver, selling over 330,000 copies to date.
