Countdown To Afropunk LDN 2017
South London’s newest venue Printworks is set to host Afropunk 2017 on the 22nd & 23rd of July and the countdown is officially on.
Lianne La Havas, NAO, Thundercat, The Internet, Danny Brown, Little Simz, Jazzie B, JME, Willow Smith, Nadia Rose, Kojey Radical and Gal Dem DJ’s are a sample of the names set to take over this special weekend of music.
A celebration of multiculturalism, creativity and diversity Afropunk was borne of a desire to revel in our collective differences; and for Afropunk’s second outing in London, organisers are laying on a feast of food, art and music across two days. Heritage acts will mingle with the breakout stars in a mesh of grime, hip-hop, soul, reggae and pop.
Afropunk’s Spinthrift Marketplace will showcase arts, crafts, tattoos and clothes; home made trinkets of beauty and wonders of art including Jamaican lifestyle brand Uptown Yardie, African bags, and jewellery from Funky N Chunky, and accessories from Teah Wilson, Continent Clothing for socially conscious clothes crafted in Africa, and United80; Brixton based cultural project. BITES AND BEATS will be Afropunk’s in house food festival in what promises to be a calendar event of summer ‘17.
Afropunk is known for it’s community driven initiatives worldwide and, at this year’s event London’s Printworks will host Activism Row – an interactive, site specific educational installation. British Cultural Archives, Amnesty International UK, Index on Censorship, and Slavery Remembrance are the non profit organisations that will be on hand to inform revellers about participation opportunities
The ‘My Yard’ installation at Afropunk ‘17, will centre around the idea changeable of home for so many queer and trans people of colour. Taking the lead from the lived experiences of the black British queer community BBZ x I-D will pay homage to all facets of identity starting with bedroom DJ’s, black neeks and bashment studs all the way through to trans youth, brown punks, road man, soft femmes, road femmes, jungle heads, channel U Man-Dem and every possible shade in between. Spearheaded by BBZ, supported by the iconic i-D magazine, and sponsored by Fred Perry.
Ahead of the festival next weekend, and in keeping with Afropunk’s love-the-skin-you’re-in ethos organisers have compiled a short film entitled ‘Unapologetically Black’ over on their Facebook page. In praise of black culture, heritage and history the film is a celebration of being black British. Featuring BBZ, MEME Gold, Chardine Taylor Stone, Born N Bread and more the video is available to watch here
After the party, it’s the after party and Afropunk LDN will be offering free entry for the first 100 ticket holders to Miranda Bar at the Ace Hotel in Shoreditch on both days for a chance to see PDA : Larry B, Mischa Mafia, Crackstevens, Covco, Shygirl (DJ set) on Saturday night and BBZ + Friends : Chloedees, Lady Amz, Lil C, Shy One on Sunday night after dark.
Party people are reminded that Saturday’s after dark party is church dress – come accordingly. While Sunday promises vibes with BBZ, south London’s queer led ‘tun up’ – a femme focused all star line up and sounds to sweat to.
