DJ Target’s Definitive Book ‘Grime Kids’ Celebrates The Culture
“Today, in 2018, grime music and the culture that surrounds it has exploded into an international phenomenon.”
DJ Target’s self-penned debut, ‘Grime Kids’ arrives today. ‘The Inside Story of the Global Grime Takeover’ told by one of the scene’s bedrock figures launched to a packed house in London’s Ace hotel last night. Generations of UK music pioneers gathered in celebration, blessed and highly favoured, it was yet another milestone moment for a scene and culture that has given opportunities to so many and laid foundations for those still yet to come.
“Household names were borne out of those housing estates, and the music industry now jumps to the beat of their gritty reality rather than the tune of glossy aspiration.” Mic men: Jammer, P Money, Little Dee, Discarda and Nu Brand Flexx raised the heat inside Miranda club as Slimzee, Karnage, Sir Spyro, Melody Kane and Seani B provided the soundtrack to a night filled with friendships and memories. While Grime is the buzzword that is now lazily used to describe all things ‘urban’, ‘Grime Kids’ is the definitive inside story – told from the front line.
The hype, heat and energy that filled the room last night as the mic swapped hands and the DJ’s changed over, was the very same undiluted essence that transformed these council estate kids into visionary music makers. Target’s narration of this journey to mainstream and international recognition is the account fans of the culture have been waiting for.
“A voice emerged from the youth, with an urgency that demanded to be heard. A voice of our own. It began on east London housing estates, a sound influenced by everything from Jamaican dancehall and US hip hop to British underground music scenes like jungle and UK garage.”
Grime Kids is out now in Hardback, e-book and audiobook and available in all book stores.
