Freddie Gibbs Drops ‘Alexys’ With Kaytranada & BADBADNOTGOOD

Freddie Gibbs has given us two killer LPs in recent years: namely, ‘Piñata’ and ‘Shadow of a Doubt’. The former was produced entirely by Madlib (say no more), while the latter explored a more modern sound, enlisting the likes of Boi-1da, Kaytranada, Frank Dukes and Murda Beatz to update his street anthems. Luckily for us, on March 31st, we get ‘You Only Live 2wice’ – his brand new project.

And to get a little buzz going – he’s dropped a fucking banger. ‘Alexys’ will ostensibly appear on the project, and gives us some insight into how it will shape up sonically; my guess – in the sweet spot between his last two projects. The track is chopped up by Kaytranada and BADBADNOTGOOD, and their eerie sample layering will be ringing in your ears long after the three minutes are up. Gibbs goes full kingpin too, opening up with, ‘I first tasted cocaine in tenth grade / Homie at the table choppin’ Rick James’. You see why his nickname’s Freddie Kane, right?

Anyway, his bars demonstrate, above all, that this OG’s still got a lot more to say about his past life – and we will be waiting, ears pricked, for March 31st.
