Is Alessia Cara An Anti-Social Pessimist Anymore?

Ever wondered why you’re standing dead centre in a party and wondering why you’re “Here”, 18 year old Alessia seem’s to have captured a common moody in her unapologetically autobiographical debut single ‘Here’.

Who would have ever thought that flipping Portishead’s ‘Glory Box’ would have landed Alessia on every hitlist with “Here”. It’s authored from the perspective of an unenthusiastic partygoer who’s counting the minutes till it’s time to leave. “I’m sorry if I seem uninterested / Or I’m not listenin’, or I’m indifferent / Truly I ain’t got no business here” and “Excuse me if I seem a little unimpressed with this / An antisocial pessimist, but usually I don’t mess with this”.

In short, Alessia may be a little bit of an introvert but she’s got cause to be confident now, this small-town girl even managed to catch the attention of fellow Canadian Drake. Signed to Def Jam who also famously launched the career of Justin Bieber after a slew of YouTube videos, she says “Def Jam got what I am trying to do: I want my music to be cool and reflective of my influences –Drake, Amy Winehouse, Ed Sheeran– but still new.”

Alessia made her name through her YouTube cover versions and in true personal style, she couldn’t help herself from giving Drake’s “Hotline Bling” her own twist; with a little acoustic guitar she puts in a little soulful, jazzy number on it.

Currently A-listed on 1Xtra and having already performed a sold out show in London, Alessia is definitely ready for big things and maybe a little partying?
