Jamila Woods A Song About A ‘Blk Girl Soldier’
Jamila Woods, the Chicago-based singer and poet, memorable since her feature on Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment’s infectious single ‘Sunday Candy’, has had quite a day in the spotlight.
It’s not just about her feature on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s ‘White Privilege 2‘ that’s catching all kinds of heat, but Jamila’s also got her own freedom song out with ‘Blk Girl Soldier’. In an interview with Billboard, Jamila explains the inspiration behind her new single – “I love how music and chants were used in the Civil Rights movement to help people keep marching. How songs were both a balm and a call to action.”
2016 will undoubtedly give rise to a new generation of artists who’ll keep bringing their socio-political mind into their music and we don’t mind. This week alone we’ve had new music from Eryn Allen Kane’s ‘How Many Times‘ and Jorja Smith’s debut ‘Blue Lights‘ and now there’s a new addition to the playlist – stream Jamila Woods ‘blk girl soldier’ below.
