Kickstarter Launch of Limited Prints Of The Wu Tang Clan
With an archive of 1000’s of negatives of analogue images captured over a 20 year span, Eddie Otchere has never abandoned his dedication to the art of analogue. Resisting the urge to click to the digital heels and follow in the footsteps of the crowd, photography as an analogue craft is still his domain.
“Photography is the truth. In its honesty lies its power, and in my hands photography is a marker pen that scrawls my Hip Hop testament on the wall. The exhibition ‘The Icons of Wu Tang’ is the culmination of a journey through photography, of unlocking shadows trapped on film, then reproduced with ink onto paper.”
Photographing the most iconic figures in Hip-Hop from the 90’s to present day, Eddie’s images remain iconic to the point of having Shepard Fairey take one of his prints of Notorious B.I.G and recreat it into an Obey Giant Poster. Selected by DJ Semtex as one of the featured British photographers in his forthcoming book for Thames & Hudson, the 90’s was documented on British soil by Eddie and featured editorially in many leading music magazines. There are few who haven’t caught the eye of Eddie’s lens and analogue frame and rarely have photographers been able to capture each member of the Wu Tang Clan in this way.
Previously unseen and unavailable, Eddie’s collection of portraits of members of the Wu Tang Clan are nothing short of iconic and he’s selected a one-off series of just 10 shots from his collection to be made available for a limited time only to purchase and view at his exhibition in March 2016. The photographs are the best examples of film to digital processes.
Launching a Kickstarter campaign for this new exhibition in London, Eddie has drawn together an exciting mix of long-time collaborators and photographic innovators, curated by FilmsNotDead.
The exhibition will feature 10 prints made on Hahnemuhle 308gsm archival paper using chromatic light fast pigment ink and coated in museum grade varnish to encapsulate the image. These images will be printed by award winning master colour printer, Danny Pope, who will be using traditional late 1990s photo printing and scanning processes, Danny has previously printed for Linda McCartney, Eve Arnold and Charlie Phillips.
The 37th Chamber will be constructed within Brixton East using wood sourced from renewable sources and sought locally. The carpenters are specialists in period restoration and will create a 9.5m long and 4m wide chamber.
Making news with the sale of their one and only copy of the Wu-Tang Clan album ‘Once Upon A Time In Shaolin’ selling at “an undisclosed figure in the millions,” according to a statement, the Wu Tang Clan can never be replicated.
