Lil Yachty Is Unapologetically Atlanta On His ‘Lil Boat’
The Atlanta t/rap scene is thriving, the latest in offering is 18 year old Lil Yachty, who’s just dropped a surprise 14 track mixtape, aptly named ‘Lil Boat’.
Lil Yachty lies within the whole viral/deliberately weird rap scene that lie on the peripheries of traditional rap definitions (think: Thug, OutKast and the Awful Records crew). The flame-like red hair, beaded and braided Lil Yachty had viral success with his 2015 track 1Night – which to date, has totaled over 15.4 million SoundCloud plays (yes, take that in for a second – 15 million). His other release ‘Minnesota’ caught the attention of the OVO camp, which landed a spot play on Drake’s Beats 1 OVO Sound Radio show, and back in February, he was found at the Madison Square Garden modelling for Kanye West at his Yeezy Season 3 Show. Needless to say, the hype around Lil Yachty has been crazy, and since ‘Lil Boat’ dropped, it’s about to get crazier.
Lil Yachty has this sort of part singing-part rapping style that is so infectious it’s almost annoying. He is unapologetically and distinctively Atlanta in his sound, style and swag. Enlisting fellow ATL residents, ‘Lil Boat’ has a whole host of features including Quavo and, of course, Young Thug.
And while the die-hard rap fans among us may be questioning, scratching their heads thinking what on earth is going on here. You can’t deny that Lil Yatchy is pushing and challenging the boundaries of rap, and in a weird, very weird way, I like it.
