Nafets Lets Go On Latest Track ‘Jones’
The sound delivered by 21 year old rapper Nafet pushes the boundaries of genre, bouncing between production of his own and a musical alchemy with trusted producer CPSL0CK.
His latest single, ‘Jones’ is no exception to this – on the face seeming like a calming drift of sunny keyboards, percussion and haze, but with an important message beneath. “It’s about not losing track of who you are and where you come from,” says Nafets, who knows a thing or two about that battle, having grown up the son of Trinidadian parents who emigrated to Maryland when he was young. ‘Jones’, he explains, is about “recognizing America’s siren song and steering clear, not letting it suck you in but instead letting your roots run deep and keep you grounded.”
The writing is supremely clever, poking fun at the inanity of SoCal culture and guest spots from FOGGIERAW & SlimJimJones only add to the overall postive output. Having recently signed to Los Angeles imprint 10K Islands and likened to both Earl Sweatshirt and Chester Waston, the future looks bright for Nafets. But for him, rap is more than expression for Nafets, it’s a tool to help him cope; “For me, rapping began as a way to combat depression, which I’ve suffered from since high school”. With the arrival of his impending EP, The Death of Mr Ramen around the corner, we can expect to see his journey continue.
