Race ‘Away Away’ With Ibeyi
Feels like they’ve been ‘Away Away’ for some time, but thankfully since their debut project 2 years ago, Ibeyi are back and readily teasing their forthcoming sophomore album.
The 22 year old French-Cuban twins Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz who spend time between Paris, Cuba and London, return with a new video for ‘Away Away’, shot in Richard Russell’s west London studio. A bass heavy drumbeat gives rise to the duo’s silky vocals as they fuse their modern interpretation of a Yorùbá chant for the Orisha Aggayu (the ferryman-like god who provides strength) with electronic and hip-hop heavy sounds.
The song represents a timely viewpoint “looking out onto the world’s craziness, which is symbolized by the sirens heard in the track, and wondering if the promises of a better world will be made true?”
The new follow-up project credits producer/XL boss Richard Russell alongside features from Kamasi Washington, Chilly Gonzales, La Mala Rodriguez and Meshell Ndegeocello.
