Rapsody Imparts ‘Laila’s Wisdom’
If 2017 has been about one thing – it’s been about two opposing sides of our disparate perspectives pushed to extreme ends, expressing a growing polarity between left and right. If hip hop in 2017 has been about one thing – it’s been unravelling a growing chasm between the unwritten rules of gameplay. On one end reside the upper echelons of rap dexterity loaded with rich narratives imparting a path to an elevated state of mind, on the other the darker depths of troubled minds, running deeper into a rabbit hole of conflicted intentions.
But between the world and me, Rapsody ain’t playin’ sides – “It’s all Hip Hop, you can’t divide what ain’t different”.
Since Rapsody grabbed the spotlight with her guest appearance on Kendrick’s TLOP with ‘Complexion (A Zulu Love)’, the B-Girl has grown in stature tenfold. After the release of her ‘Crown’ EP last year, the lyricist landed a deal with Roc Nation and set out with a strut on her next journey.
“There’s levels to this but I’m a whole new floor”
‘Leila’s Wisdom’ is rap in technicolour and Rapsody is an MC who walks her path with an unquestionably confident attitude from the get-go. She knows her lane and her lane is “life music”. It’s music that celebrates self-love, embodying our modern anxieties, hopes and aspirations, proving “we can co-exist in this together. If anything, the balance is lacking but we should all respect each other and that hurts hip-hop more than anything.”
Astutely aware of her lyrical prowess, Rapsody can comfortably enlist a family of top tier musicians and rap icons side by side on one album. And from the sounds of Kendrick Lamar, Lance Skiiwalker, Anderson .Paak, Terrace Martin, Black Thought, BJ The Chicago Kid, Busta Rhymes, Musiq Soulchild, Moonchild and GQ, they’re more than ready to step to the mic.
