Samm Henshaw Covers ‘Higher Love’
Only Samm Henshaw could take an ol 80’s classic like Steve Winwood’s ‘Higher Love’ and do it the highest kind of justice with a cover that’s as emotive as it’s confident.
2015 saw the rise and rise of the 21-year-old British soul singer Samm Henshaw, who toured with James Bay and Tori Kelly in Europe and the UK, headlined his first solo tour and released his debut EP, ‘The Sound Experiment’. Henshaw honed his vocal talents in the church, and takes inspiration from the gospel greats Helen Baylor, Fred Hammond and Alvin Slaughter, and modern day vocal leads from D’Angelo, Paolo Nutini and Lauryn Hill.
Having already added a verse from MOBO-Award nominated Bonkaz on his sublime ‘Autonomy (Slave)’, Samm is ready to make sure he’s top of mind in 2016. With a yearning for creative and political freedom, ‘Autonomy’ is in Henshaw’s words, “about freedom and doing your own thing”. If his thing is this kind of thing, we can see why he’ll be one to watch this year;
