The Game Still Playing To Win
It’s Game season! The rap legend from Compton is set to release his new double-disc album, ‘The Documentary 2’ in two parts, the first on 9th October and second on 16th October.
So far, five new tracks have surfaced online, the Kanye West assisted, ‘Mula’ and ‘On Me’ with fellow Compton native Kendrick Lamar over a sample from Erykah Badu’s ‘On and On’. Others include ‘100’ featuring the current King of Hip Hop, Drake, a Skrillex produced ‘El Chapo’ and most recently, ‘Standing On Ferraris’, sampling Biggie’s ‘Kick In The Door’ along with a Diddy monologue closing the track.
In recent interviews, the 35 year old has stressed his desire and pursuit to create another classic album, one that can compare to the likes of ‘The Documentary’ and ‘Doctor’s Advocate’. Judging by the solid new material and a three year recording process, his goal is well and truly on the cards. On paper, TD2 looks like album of the decade, with remarkable features from Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Drake, Diddy, Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, Future, Ice Cube, Ab-Soul, Q-Tip, Dej Loaf, will.i.am and Fergie, the prospect of another classic is looking more favourable and salivating. Consistency is key with this new LP, a vital quality that’s been the missing ‘Jesus’-piece in the puzzle in previous Game records.
To say Game thrives off of controversy is an understatement. We all remember his infamous beef with 50 Cent back in 2005, with this almost instigating what Game believes to be his best album to date, ‘Doctor’s Advocate’. Fast forward to 2015, Game is currently involved in a minute Instagram spat with Young Thug, prompted by Game’s comments on The Breakfast Club about Thugga’s choice of clothing. Can some of this fiery attitude be reciprocated in musical form? Only time will tell.
However, even if our expectations have been risen too lavishly and we are disappointed with the end product, Game’s credibility will not be diminished. He’s cemented his place in Hip Hop’s history books as one of Compton’s most established and successful artists, selling around 5 million albums in the US alone, inspiring younger generations to break out and prosper too.
