The xx Release the Night + Day Brixton Film

If you’ve lived or worked in Brixton, or like me do both, the community spirit that continues to resonate here is simply just – uplifting. Despite the day to day gentrification process currently plaguing the area, there’s something that can’t be stripped from Brixton. During The xx’s recent 8 day Night + Day festival, Brixton showed off exactly why there’s nothing that can gentrify that raw spirit.

Night + Day Brixton saw The xx collaborate with a host of local Brixton institutions, in the process capturing much of Brixton culture. Initially announced as a record-breaking run of seven sold out shows at the legendary 5,000 capacity O2 Academy Brixton, the event expanded taking on a life of its own. With featured guest lineups for the nightly live shows including Sampha, Kelela and Benji B, the week-long events also included panel talks, radio broadcasts and specially curated cinema screenings by day.

Collaborating with local radio station Reprezent FM out of Pop Brixton and The Whirled Cinema with panel talks and Q&As, there were also a series of after parties with local venues and promoters. Creating a unique multi-disciplinary cultural event, you can now look back at all the highlights from Brixton Night + Day with The xx in the new 21 minute film. Directed by Tayo Rapoport + Josh Renaut, and produced by London-based production company CHILD, the film vividly documents The xx’s acclaimed 8 day event that took place in Brixton from 8th-15th March 2017.

The film features interviews and exclusive footage with the likes of The xx’s Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim and Jamie Smith, Adwoah Aboah, Jeremy Deller, the Baytree Centre, Benji B, Florence Welch, Raw Material Studios, Gilles Peterson, Robyn, Savages’ Jehnny Beth, Reprezent FM, Hustlebucks and a host of people who were instrumental in creating and attending the events.

Help and support came from Artist Pledge, a nonprofit that empowers artists with the knowledge, research & resources to support social causes effectively. Night + Day Brixton also supported and raised money for a variety of local charities that included;

198 Contemporary Arts and Learning
Brixton Green
Marcus Lipton Community Enterprise
Photofusion
Raw Material
Spiral
The Baytree Centre

In addition to appearances at festivals round the globe, The xx have also recently announced headline shows in Kallang, Singapore (Singapore Indoor Stadium, 25th July) and Glasgow, UK (SWG3 Galvanizers Yard, 29th & 30th August).
