UK Takes Back Control From ‘We The People’ As Snoopers Bill Passes

Think this is George Orwells ‘1984’ in the present-future, then think again 2016 is a whole different kind of totalitarian dystopian mindfuck.

Can’t get through a day without a reality-tv-celebrity-turned-president-elect trash talking on Twitter? Well sorry get used to it, while Trump goes on acting very unpresidential, distraction after distraction will be getting you all more caught up. You’ll have to endure noise from Kanye the celebrity-married-to-reality-star-wannabe-president vying for attention like a lost child. It’ll keep you satisfactorily irate long into the future, while something a lot darker keeps going on in the ether.

When NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden tells you that –The UK has just legalized the most extreme surveillance in the history of western democracy. It goes farther than many autocracies” – it’s almost ironic. Ironic because I can’t sleep anymore while lyrics from actor-rapper-director-singer aka Glover aka Gambino’s new track ‘Redbone’ are ringing through my head.

“But stay woke / Ni**as creeping’ /They gon’ find you / Gon’ catch you sleepin’ (Oooh) / Now stay woke, ni**as creeping’ /Now don’t you close your eyes.”

If you’re hoping that cultural icons may be the critics we can rely on to channel all our frustrations, you might need to be staying woke not just to outside forces but the inner demons in our own rap stars. While following Kanye or Wayne’s faux pas’, there’s a whole lot more following going on your internet activity. It’s got us all wondering why we don’t just get off the grid and get back to analogue real quick.

In short this great Britain of ours has just passed The Investigatory Powers Bill aka Theresa May’s dirty Snoopers charter from 2015. Both Houses of Parliament have let it through and once it receives Royal Assent it will become law. Wired breaks down the details of the power grab here, which will allow mass surveillance, hacking your phones, laptops and every conceivable activity on the net. Where was the opposition you ask – caught sleeping I guess – what! Stay woke!

In an attempt to thwart any attempts to protect freedoms, we’re entering the age where libertarian beliefs that both freedom and democracy are incompatible, are now being enforced outside of our scrutiny and with all kinds of authoritarian determination.

It is the golden age of surveillance, they’ve never had so much data – Joseph Cannataci, UN special rapporteur on privacy

Don’t think getting out of the grips of the EU will leave much in your hands. Theresa May isn’t stopping there, next on her agenda is her mission to get a handle on your human rights. With plans to replace the Human Rights Act with a British Bill of Rights,

Watch as the whirlwind to ‘take back control’ gets it’s teeth stuck into controlling you.

There’s no better time than now to get a grip and in the meantime get back to this culture in the hope that maybe some rapper intentions are purer than others when you watch the new video from A Tribe Called Quest – ‘We The People’
