Watch The First Trailer For Detroit Starring John Boyega
Kathryn Bigelow the only female director to ever win an Academy Award for Best Director returns after five years with a new feature-length film Detroit. The director of Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty and Point Break, casts John Boyega (The Force Awakens), Anthony Mackie (Hurt Locker), Tyler James Williams (Dear White People) and Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton) in the drama about the 1967 Detroit Riot.
Tagged with the line “It’s time we knew”, the forthcoming film will revisit the five-day riot in Detroit when the city blazed in the 90 degree heat, emotions boiled and fires raged in the heart of Detroit’s ghetto. Starting at 6.30am on Sunday 23rd July 50 years ago, Detroit police had broken into a “blind pig” (an unlicensed drinking joint) on 12th Street the night before, arresting 82 people. Protests led to anger, unleashing one of the most deadliest moments of civil unrests of American history with the deaths of 43 people and over 1000 injuries. Fewer police were on duty than on a weekday and at first little action was taken to interfere with the looting, but as the intensity of the race riot rose, the authorities who had initially been caught off guard, brought in the National Guard.
Annapurna Pictures has released the first trailer for the film, a much watch.
The film will open in US cinemas on August 4, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Detroit riots.
