Why Being Fresh is All About ‘Fresh Dressed’
Funky, fat-laced Adidas, Kangol hats, and Cazal shades, may be a thing of the past but it’s where a totally original look was born—Fresh—and it emerged from a cultural force that was revving up in the streets to take the world by storm – Hip-Hop.
Hip-hop and it’s relationship to fashion, was an unstoppable force that created the tipping point for brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Timbaland, propelled from the streets and into middle and mainstream America.
Being fresh is more important than having money – Kanye West
Premiered at Sundance Festival, ‘Fresh Dressed’ the documentary chronicles the explosion of hip-hop fashion, and the hustle that brought oversized pants and graffiti-drenched jackets from the New York discount markets to high fashion’s catwalks and shopping malls all around the world. Moving from pre-Civil War slavery to South Bronx in the 1970s and the super-connected niche cultures of today, Fresh Dressed is the story of freedom of expression as articulated by disenfranchised and oppressed peoples. Director Sacha Jenkins’ music-drenched history as co-founder of Ego Trip, draws from a rich mix of archival materials and in-depth interviews with rappers, designers, and other industry insiders. The result is a passionate telling of how the reach for freedom of expression and a better life by a culture that refused to be squashed, would, through sheer originality and swagger, take over the mainstream.
Check out the trailer, co-produced by Nas and Peter Bittenbender of Mass Appeal, the documentary features interviews with Nasir Jones, Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, Andre Leon Talley, Damon Dash, Karl Kani, Sean “Puffy” Combs, Dapper Dan, Swizz Beatz, ASAP Rocky, Wiz Khalifa and many more.
